Week 14 proved to be a challenging one for Calne Cricket Club, with all four teams facing defeats against strong opposition.
The weekend’s results leave some teams with crucial matches ahead as they battle for position in their respective divisions.
The Calne 1st XI faced a formidable Burbage & Easton Royal side and succumbed to defeat. Despite the loss, James Gladding continued his impressive batting form, scoring 62 runs. George Dyke, in only his second appearance for the team, also provided a bright spot, taking 3 wickets.
The first team now faces two crucial matches against teams near them in the league and will need to secure victories to improve their standing.
Calne 2nd XI hosted Box at Beversbrook. Depleted by summer holidays, the team struggled as Box capitalised and posted a score of 234-7. Sam Liles was the standout bowler for Calne, taking 4 wickets.
Chasing a significant total proved too difficult, with Calne only managing 153. The defeat leaves the 2nd XI looking nervously over their shoulder with four games remaining in Division 7.
Calne 3rd XI travelled to Whitley to face Corsham 4's. Again, impacted by the holiday season, the team faced a tough Corsham side. A positive takeaway from the match was Zoe Williams' impressive bowling performance, taking 4 wickets.
However, Calne ultimately fell short by 34 runs.
Despite the string of losses, Calne CC's 4th XI embodied the club's family-oriented spirit. The team comprised players from five different families, highlighting the club's strong community ethos. Overcoming a player shortage earlier in the week, the club's youth and ladies sections stepped up to ensure all four teams could field a side – a significant achievement during the holiday season.
The 4th XI also faced defeat, with Royal Wootton Basset scoring an impressive 241-6 off their 40 overs. Krissey Mundy was the pick of the Calne bowlers with 2 wickets. Vice-captain Jase once again shone with the bat, scoring an impressive 62.
While the weekend was undoubtedly disappointing, Calne CC continues to demonstrate resilience and a strong sense of community spirit, looking ahead to upcoming matches and the opportunity to turn their fortunes around.
