CALNE MOVE INTO SECOND AFTER LATEST WIN
With leaders Durrington FC and second placed Avon Valley in A&B Cup action, Calne Athletic FC seized the opportunity to close the gap on their rivals at the top of the Gooding Accounts sponsored Trowbridge League Division Two standings.
Calne Athletic who suffered a 4-2 defeat against Avon Valley last weekend travelled to an on form Bishops Cannings Reserves outfit who were bidding to stretch their unbeaten run to six matches, but the hosts came up just short as Calne squeezed out a 4-3 win to move into second place in the table.
Bishops Cannings took a 2nd minute lead, courtesy of a Lewis Hiscock effort who netted from a Lewis Hellman assist.
Adam Richards restored parity for Calne in the 14th minute and they led 2-1 at the break, thanks to Ewan McConnachie’s 32nd minute effort.
The second half was just a minute old when a second for Adam Richards put Calne 3-1 up and then Ewan McConnichie doubled his tally for the afternoon when he made it 4-1 in the 62nd minute, Calne seemed to be out of sight.
Cannings have a new belief this term and Phil Hendy saw his side rally as they pulled a goal back on 73 minutes through William Cook, and although they threw everything at Calne looking for a third goal, the visitors held out until the 90th minute when Cook set up Lewis Hawkins, who pulled another goal back to leave a nervy final few minutes for Calne, who were able to hold out for what in the end was 3 hard fought for points.
