A total of 52 road related offences were logged by police officers carrying out 'Project Zero' patrols in the Chippenham area on Wednesday last week (13/9).

Amongst the offences dealt with was a woman in her 20's from Gloucester who was arrested in Bath Road, Chippenham by RPU on suspicion of drug driving - whilst also using her mobile phone at the wheel.

Project Zero is a roads policing operation held every Wednesday at a different location in the county. It sees officers targeting drivers committing any of the fatal five offences in a bid to reduce the number of casualties on our roads.

While the work taking place is very much everyday work for our RPU officers, the project sees the department intensify resources to target those who are driving at excess speed, drink/drug driving, using a phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt or driving in a careless or dangerous manner.

A/Insp Will Ayres said: “The most concerning incident during the day was a driver using a mobile phone at the wheel, whilst also over the drug drive limit. This was on one of the town’s busiest roads.

“The risks people are prepared to take behind the wheel of a car are unbelievable –  we don’t want this kind of complacent and reckless behaviour on our roads and that is why we will continue to take a proactive approach to educating these people and enforcing the law where driving standards fall below that expected of a competent driver.”
