In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering the mental health of police officers and staff, Wiltshire Police has officially launched the OK9 Wellbeing and Trauma Support Dog Network.
This program is designed to offer crucial emotional support to those in the Force who frequently face demanding and often dangerous situations.
Recognising the toll that trauma can take on law enforcement personnel, the OK9 initiative, rooted in the efforts of Oscar Kilo, the National Police Wellbeing Service, aims to provide a comforting presence and light relief amidst the stresses of police work.
With over 150 OK9 Wellbeing dogs already active across the UK, the addition of Wiltshire Police's own Wellbeing dogs marks a significant expansion of this vital service.
Iain Pettitt, Wellbeing Manager for Wiltshire Police, expressed the commitment of the Force to prioritising mental health. “Wiltshire Police are committed to supporting the mental health of their officers and staff, and the OK9 Wellbeing & Trauma Support Dog Network is a great way to do this," he stated.
"Spending time with a dog is proven to lower stress and anxiety and can provide some light relief from the stresses of the daily role."
The program is not only a testament to the importance of mental health but also highlights the camaraderie within the Force, as the network is operated by volunteers who dedicate their time and beloved pets to the cause.
To celebrate the launch of the OK9 Wellbeing and Trauma Support Dog Network, handlers and their four-legged companions will be making visits to police stations across the county this week, accompanied by an OK9 dog van. This initiative aims to introduce the dogs to officers and staff, showcasing the supportive role these animals can play in everyday policing life.
All OK9 dogs have undergone rigorous testing to ensure their suitability as support animals, while their handlers have completed Peer Support training, equipping them to provide assistance to individuals or teams who wish to engage with the Wellbeing Dogs.
