Wiltshire Council is encouraging residents to use the StreetLink service if they are concerned about anyone sleeping rough this winter.

StreetLink connects people who are sleeping on the streets with local support teams. When a member of the public sends in a report, the details are passed to the council so outreach officers can visit the individual, offer a warm place to stay and arrange ongoing help.

Throughout November and December, the council will be sharing advice and information on its social media channels to highlight what people can do when they see someone rough sleeping.

The council works with rough sleepers all year, supported by local charities that provide both practical assistance and longer-term guidance. Since November last year, early morning outreach teams have supported 420 people. Officers go out in pairs, often taking hot drinks and checking what immediate support can be offered before arranging a follow-up appointment to explore accommodation options.

At present, more than 18 people in Wiltshire are being helped into short-term accommodation. The council’s rough sleeper tenancy officers are also supporting over 68 people who have moved into longer-term housing.

Cllr Adrian Foster, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Seeing someone sleeping rough is heartbreaking, and while giving money might feel like the easiest way to help, the most effective action is to report through StreetLink. This allows us to respond quickly and provide the right support. Donations to local homeless charities also make a real difference, funding practical help and advice. Many rough sleepers have experienced deep trauma, so building trust takes time. Our outreach team works patiently and compassionately to help each individual find a warm, safe place to stay.”

Residents can submit information to StreetLink online, helping ensure support reaches people who need it most.
