Wiltshire Council is proposing changes to the way it supports working-age residents who receive help with their Council Tax through the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.
At the moment, the level of support can change every month if someone’s income fluctuates, even slightly. The council says this can make things complicated and confusing for both residents and the staff who manage the scheme.
Under the new proposal, which could come into effect from April 2026, support would only be updated when there is a significant change in someone’s circumstances - for example, moving house, starting or leaving a job, a change in income, or someone moving in or out of the household.
If approved, the new system would only apply to working-age residents under 66, and would not affect those of pensionable age.
Cllr Gavin Grant, Cabinet Member for Finance, said the aim was to make the scheme simpler and fairer. “We want to make it easier for people to understand and manage the support they receive with their Council Tax,” he said. “By focusing updates on significant changes rather than monthly fluctuations, we can reduce confusion and make the system fairer and more transparent.”
Wiltshire Council is asking for public feedback before finalising the plans. Residents can share their views through an online survey on the council’s website between Monday 6th October and Friday 31st October 2025.
