A WILTSHIRE and Berkshire Canal Trust project to build a wildlife meadow at Naish Hill, between Pewsham and Lacock, has received a welcome boost from Chippenham Town Council.

A generous grant of £500 was presented to Howard Yardy, wildlife officer for the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch, by Cllr Mathew Bragg,Vice-Chair of the Council Donations Sub Committee and Mayor Conor Melvin.

The money will be used to purchase a diverse mix of wildflower plants for the meadow alongside the Wilts & Berks Canal near Double Bridge.

The aim is to counter the ecological crisis by supporting insect life which benefits creatures further up the food chain, including birds, bats and small mammals.

There are lots of opportunities for local people to get involved in this important scheme. Volunteers can help with planting trees and hedges, sowing seeds and coppicing. Business owners might be interested to know that corporate work parties can be arranged too.
