Wiltshire Council has announced several upcoming traffic changes in Calne, including a temporary speed limit on the A3102 and new experimental restrictions on High Street, in an effort to manage traffic flow and facilitate roadworks.
A temporary 30mph speed limit will be introduced on a section of the A3102 in Calne to allow for carriageway reconfiguration works.
The reduced speed limit will be in effect from the roundabout junction with Stickleback Road to the roundabout junction with Oxford Road. Traffic signs will clearly indicate the new speed restriction.
The limit will come into force on 28th October 2025 and is expected to remain in place until 13th February 2026, although this is subject to weather conditions. The legal order allows for a maximum duration of 18 months.
In addition, Wiltshire Council has confirmed that it made two Experimental Traffic Orders on 27th August 2025. These orders are initially in place for 18 months, during which time the Council will assess whether they should be made permanent.
The Experimental Orders are as follows:
-
Order 1:
Revokes the existing weight restriction on High Street and introduces a new 3.5 tonne weight limit on High Street, Calne, from its junction with Wood Street to A4 Curzon Street. -
Order 2:
Introduces a 9.9 metre vehicle length restriction on the same stretch of High Street, also between Wood Street and A4 Curzon Street.
These changes aim to manage heavy vehicle traffic and improve safety and accessibility in the town centre. The impact of these restrictions will be monitored, and local feedback will be considered before any decision is made on making the changes permanent.
