Wiltshire Council has confirmed that preparatory works will take place this month ahead of planned upgrades to the traffic lights on the A4 at The Strand in Calne.

Wiltshire Council will be carrying out a series of improvement works to The Strand, designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall environment for residents and visitors.

Planned Improvements:

  • Upgrading the four-way traffic lights and pedestrian crossing

  • Relocating the bus stop currently situated outside the Town Hall

  • Repairing and repaving footways to improve safety and accessibility

  • Replacing benches beneath the trees along The Strand

On the evenings of  Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th September, contractors will be taking core samples from the carriageway and footway between 7pm and 6am. Temporary four-way traffic lights will be in operation during the works to ensure safety. The samples will help engineers design the new pavement and assess whether any tar-bound materials are present.

Further investigations will follow from the week commencing Monday 22 September, when trial holes will be dug to confirm the exact location and depth of underground utilities. These works will take place during the daytime. Barriers and cones will be in place, with a temporary footway closure near the culvert on the southern approach to the junction.

The investigations are intended to reduce risks during construction and ensure the final traffic signal design and detection systems are suitable for the site.
