Drivers in Calne are being warned to expect significant disruption next week after an overlap of major roadworks is set to severely restrict access routes through the town.
Delays to ongoing works near the Lidl development mean the site will not be cleared by Monday as originally planned, increasing the risk of congestion as Wiltshire Council prepares to begin its own roadworks on the A3102.
Wiltshire Council has confirmed that weather-related delays will keep Lidl contractors on site until at least Friday, 6th February. This is expected to coincide with council works to level the A3102, which are still scheduled to begin on Monday, 2nd February.
The overlap means motorists may be unable to reach Bassett via the A3102 or Oxford Road, with limited alternative routes available.
While the road closure on Oxford Road is still due to be lifted over the weekend as planned, the work has been delayed due to severe weather conditions. From Sunday afternoon, three-way temporary traffic lights will be in place while final elements are completed.
The closure on the A3102 will go ahead as planned on Monday.
Cllr Pearce-Kearney said the situation was “deeply disappointing” and that he had made repeated efforts to persuade the council to delay its works to avoid the clash.
He said he would continue discussions with council officers over the weekend in an attempt to find a solution, adding that traffic conditions would be closely monitored on Monday morning to see if any steps could be taken to ease congestion.
Cllr Kearney added that he shared residents’ frustration and encouraged those affected to contact him directly so their experiences could be passed on to the officers overseeing the works.
