Motorists are being advised of overnight road closures on a key stretch of the A4 in Calne this week, as Wiltshire Council carries out urgent resurfacing work to improve the carriageway.
From the evening of Wednesday, 3rd September, a section of the A4 - between the Greenacres Way roundabout and the junction with Ratford Bridge South near Chilvester Hill - will be closed to all traffic between 7pm and 6am. The closure is expected to remain in place for three nights, with work scheduled to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.
The works are being carried out under emergency powers granted by Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, and are considered essential to ensure road safety and surface quality.
During the closure, a clearly signposted diversion will be in operation. Drivers will be redirected via the A3102 and A342, reconnecting with unaffected sections of the A4. Wiltshire Council has assured residents that access will be maintained for those living or operating businesses within the affected area, although some delays are likely due to the nature of the works.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said: "We appreciate that these overnight closures may cause some disruption, but they are necessary to ensure the safety and longevity of this key route. We’ll be doing everything we can to keep inconvenience to a minimum and thank residents and road users for their patience."
The work is expected to be completed within the three-night window, although the legal notice allows for a closure of up to five days should unexpected issues arise.
