Motorists in Calne are being warned to expect further disruption as Wales & West Utilities begins work to upgrade part of the gas network in the Brewers Lane area.

The project will continue until 24th October, and will see Brewers Lane closed for the duration. A diversion route will be clearly signposted, but drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time - something that’s becoming all too familiar for anyone trying to get around Calne lately.

With roadworks already in place across several parts of town, many residents have described local traffic as a daily headache. This latest closure adds to what has been a particularly challenging spell for motorists, with long delays during school runs and peak commuting hours.

Wales & West Utilities, which manages the region’s gas network, says the work is “vital to ensure gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area”.

Project manager Mick Gallavin acknowledged the disruption but stressed the long-term benefits: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.”

He added that the work will help prepare Calne’s gas infrastructure to transport greener energy in the years ahead.

Wales & West Utilities operates the gas pipeline network across Wales and the South West, supplying energy to more than 7.5 million people.
