Wiltshire Council libraries are inviting children aged 4 to 11 to dive into a world of stories, nature, and imagination as this year’s Summer Reading Challenge kicks off with the enchanting new theme, Story Garden.
The much-loved annual campaign begins with Super Sign-Up Saturday on 5th July, with the challenge running right through the summer holidays until 6th September.
Children can sign up for free at any Wiltshire library and start reading from Monday 21st July. Each time they finish a book, they’ll collect special stickers, with a certificate and badge awarded when they complete the challenge by reading six books (or the equivalent number of eBooks or audiobooks).
This year’s theme, Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, encourages children to explore the link between storytelling and the natural world. They can read any books of their choosing, from picture books to chapter books, audiobooks, or digital titles.
Cllr Mel Jacob, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Engagement and Corporate Services, praised the initiative for its positive impact on young readers.
“This much-loved and important campaign encourages children to keep reading over the summer in a fun and accessible way,” said Cllr Jacob. “It also gives families and carers a way to support reading at home – and helps prevent the learning dip that can happen over the holidays.”
In addition to the core reading challenge, many Wiltshire libraries will be offering special themed activities, as well as regular events like rhyme times and mini challenges tailored to younger or older readers.
Families who prefer to take part digitally can also join in online at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk, where children can set their reading goals, track progress, and unlock digital rewards.
Last year, over 6,500 Wiltshire children took part in the challenge, with 84% saying it helped them enjoy reading more, and nearly 90% reporting it made them feel happy.
Wiltshire Council encourages all families to visit their local library this summer and take part in this fun, free challenge that keeps young minds active and imaginations blooming.
