A former rescue dog adopted from Dogs Trust has marked his first year of service as a police dog with Wiltshire Police.

Reggie, a three-year-old English Springer Spaniel, was adopted in February 2024 and has since become a valued member of the force's Dog Unit.

As a Drugs, Cash, and Firearms Recovery dog, Reggie has carried out over 60 searches, uncovering thousands of pounds in cash and quantities of drugs, including cannabis, cocaine, and heroin.

Reggie's journey began at Dogs Trust Evesham, where he was identified as having the potential to excel as a working dog due to his high energy levels and focus. His handler, Police Constable Emma Rice, described Reggie as a "joy to work with" and a "workaholic" who loves nothing more than searching and receiving his beloved tennis ball as a reward.

Wiltshire Police's Dog Unit has praised Reggie's achievements, highlighting the success of their partnership with Dogs Trust. Sergeant Jon Harwood said, "We're grateful to have given Reggie the opportunity to put his intelligence and energy to good use. He's a shining example of how rescue dogs can thrive in a working environment."

Reggie's story is also a testament to the Animal Welfare Visitors Scheme (AWS), which ensures high animal welfare standards in police dog training, housing, and transport.

As the first rescue dog adopted by Wiltshire Police since joining the scheme, Reggie has set a promising precedent for future collaborations.

Louise Crawford, Animal Welfare Scheme Coordinator, said, "Reggie's story showcases the wonderful work that can be achieved when we partner with police forces to find working homes for dogs with special talents."
