POLICE are urging drivers to remain vigilant after a spate of catalytic converter thefts reported over the weekend.

The incidents occurred between 6:15am on Saturday 23rd November and 7:15am on Sunday 24th November at Lainey's Close and Cold Harbour Lane in Marlborough.

Inspector Simon Garrett  said: “While we know this type of theft is difficult to prevent, there are steps that can be taken to help reduce your risk of falling victim to this criminal activity."

To combat the rising trend of catalytic converter thefts, police have shared several preventative measures for vehicle owners:

  • Garage Parking - Whenever possible, park your car in a locked garage. If this isn't feasible, opt for well-lit and populated areas.
  • Smart Parking Strategies - Position your vehicle close to fences, walls, or curbs with the exhaust side nearest to these barriers, making theft more challenging.
  • Public Parking Awareness - Avoid parking half on the pavement and half on the road, as this can give thieves easier access to the catalytic converter.
  • Crowded Spaces - In public car parks, try to park alongside other vehicles and angle your bonnet towards a wall. This positioning makes it harder for thieves to approach.
  • Fleet Parking Tactics - For businesses with multiple vehicles, park lower clearance vehicles strategically to block access to higher clearance ones.
  • Enhanced Security Measures - If your catalytic converter is bolted on, consider asking a local garage to weld the bolts, making removal more difficult. Furthermore, etching a serial number on the converter can deter thieves.
  • Physical Anti-Theft Devices - Purchasing a ‘cage clamp’ can provide an additional layer of security, locking around the converter to hinder its removal.

Inspector Garrett emphasised the importance of community vigilance: “If you see someone acting suspiciously under a vehicle, report it to the police. Please gather as much information as possible, including any vehicle registrations, as this significantly aids our inquiries.”

As the investigations continue, local drivers are encouraged to take these precautions seriously to protect their vehicles and reduce the risk of falling prey to this increasingly common crime.
