Police have maintained an increased presence in Chippenham as investigations continue into the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy.

A 16-year-old boy was stabbed on London Road on Saturday, 31st January, and later died in hospital from his injuries. A 15-year-old boy was arrested shortly afterwards in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

On Monday, police enquiries continued at the scene, with parts of London Road still cordoned off. Two nearby alleyways also remained closed while specialist officers carried out further forensic examinations.

A visible police presence was also reported in Chippenham town centre, particularly around the High Street.

Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson said: "Firstly, my upmost thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of the 16-year-old boy who has died following a stabbing in Chippenham on Saturday afternoon. To see a young life ended in this way is truly horrendous.

“In a close-knit community like Chippenham, the effects of this will be felt across the town. Officers must now be given the time and space to fully investigate and I urge our communities to avoid speculation while criminal proceedings are active and a family grieves the loss of their child.

“Young people, especially teenagers, need to feel safe, and we must reinforce at every level that carrying a knife will never solve the challenges they face. By working together, we can aim to avoid similar situations to the senseless tragedy we have seen in Chippenham this weekend.”

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Darren Ambrose described the incident as “a tragedy which has resulted in a young man losing his life”.

He said: “We understand the concern that this will have in the local community and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Our enquiries are ongoing and it is vitally important that we hear from anyone with information about what took place.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant CCTV footage is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting log 189 of Saturday, January 31. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
