Police officers were out in Calne, Chippenham and Corsham yesterday, carrying out immigration and welfare checks at local businesses.

Nail bars, car washes and building sites were included in the visits, to identify any potential offences related to immigration, modern slavery and human trafficking.

The work was held as part of a week of action in the Chippenham neighbourhood area which will see officers visiting local schools and colleges to discuss various topics including county lines and exploitation, as well as rural crime drop-in sessions, and speed checks.

Sgt Mike Tripp said: “Throughout today, officers have attended approximately 10 premises to conduct immigration checks on workers, as well as checks on general working conditions and the welfare of those at the premises.

“While no arrests have been made today, it is important that our officers continue to regularly check that employees are working legally and being treated appropriately.

“It’s also crucial that business owners check the immigration status of any employees they are hiring. We will continue to clamp down on those breaching laws around immigration and employees rights.”
