Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Gibson is calling for urgent intervention from OFCOM, the industry regulator, after Royal Mail failed to meet its first-class delivery targets in the SN postcode area.
New figures reveal a significant shortfall, with only 75.2% of first-class post delivered on time – far below the company’s 93% target. This means nearly one in five deliveries are arriving late, causing disruption for residents and businesses across Chippenham, Calne, Corsham, Lyneham, and Royal Wootton Bassett.
Gibson has accused Royal Mail of "failing people here in our constituency," citing a string of complaints from residents and local businesses regarding postal delays impacting everything from hospital appointments to crucial business deliveries.
"These missed targets are shocking and are leaving countless people in the lurch here in our part of Wiltshire," said Gibson.
"People rely on these deliveries and having them arrive on time to go about their lives and should not be forced to put up with this disruption."
The MP emphasised the growing frustration among constituents. "This saga has been going on for far too long and people are rightly sick to the back teeth of it. It is time OFCOM stepped in to act on these unacceptable delays and hold this failing service accountable for letting people down here in Wiltshire.”
Gibson vowed to continue pressuring Royal Mail to improve its service. The Liberal Democrats are advocating for increased transparency and stricter oversight of Royal Mail's performance, warning of further deterioration in service standards without proper accountability.
The data shows the issue isn't isolated to Swindon, with similar shortfalls in the BA (Bath) and GL (Gloucester) postcode areas.
