A man has been arrested following an incident involving a stationary car on the M4 on this afternoon - Tuesday 27th January.
Police were called at around 2.30pm after receiving reports that a man had been seriously assaulted while sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle on the westbound hard shoulder between junctions 16 and 17.
Officers were told that another man had left the scene before emergency services arrived.
The motorway was closed in both directions while an urgent investigation was carried out.
A 40-year-old man, believed to be the registered owner of the vehicle, was located nearby and arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and drink driving. He was taken to hospital with injuries and will be questioned once medically fit.
The victim was also taken to hospital for treatment. Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-changing.
The M4 has since reopened in both directions.
