A former Wiltshire Police officer who admitted drink driving would have been dismissed without notice if he had not already resigned, a misconduct hearing has ruled.
An accelerated misconduct hearing, held at Wiltshire Police headquarters on Monday 5th January, found that former PC Ted Andrews committed gross misconduct after driving under the influence of alcohol while off duty.
The hearing, chaired by the force’s Director of People, Iain Gibson, considered allegations of discreditable conduct and concluded that the standards of professional behaviour expected of police officers had been breached.
Former PC Andrews resigned from the force on Friday, ahead of the hearing. The panel determined that, had he still been serving, he would have been dismissed without notice.
The incident took place in Swindon on 20th September 2025, when Andrews was involved in a minor collision while under the influence of alcohol.
Speaking after the hearing, Mr Gibson said drink driving was “completely inexcusable” and that the former officer’s actions fell “considerably below” expected standards.
He added that public trust in the police was essential and said Andrews’ actions risked undermining the work of other officers.
Former PC Andrews has now been barred from policing. Under Police Conduct Regulations, he has 10 working days to appeal the outcome.
Separately, Andrews pleaded guilty to one count of drink driving at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on 4th November 2025. He was disqualified from driving for 16 months and fined £250.
