Police arrested 120 drivers for drink or drug driving offences in Wiltshire during December, according to figures released today by Wiltshire Police.
The total represents a 35 per cent increase compared with December 2024 and comes after a month of targeted enforcement as part of the national Operation Limit campaign.
Throughout December, Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit carried out additional patrols across the county in an effort to identify and remove impaired drivers from the roads.
Of those arrested, just over 40 per cent were on suspicion of drug driving, while almost 60 per cent were arrested for suspected drink driving offences.
Inspector Neil Duffin, who leads the Roads Policing Unit, said the increase reflected a robust policing approach rather than a relaxation of enforcement.
“During Operation Limit, our officers were out in force carrying out targeted patrols to make Wiltshire’s roads safer,” he said.
“While a rise in the number of drivers found to be drink or drug driving may seem concerning, the arrest of these individuals shows our determination to prevent serious collisions and reduce road deaths.”
He added that police now have greater capability to detect drug driving offences, which was reflected in the number of arrests made.
“Where individuals choose to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, the law is clear,” he said. “We will continue to apply this pressure throughout the year.”
Operation Limit runs nationally each December, focusing on drink and drug driving during the festive period, when officers say the risk of serious collisions increases.
