A man from Chippenham has been sentenced to rehabilitation activity for shoplifting.

Denroy Thomas, 55, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Chippenham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 13th February.

It follows three incidents of theft from Sainsbury's in Bradford on Avon and Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury's in Chippenham between November 2023 and February 2024.

Thomas was sentenced to up to five days of rehabilitation activity, given a community order and ordered to pay £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service and a surcharge of £114.

Inspector Pete Foster said: "The hope with a rehabilitation order is to prevent future offending. We continue to work closely with retailers to share information and to identify persistent offenders.

"Our officers maintain a visible presence in the town centre and routinely work with security guards and CCTV camera operators to ensure a coordinated approach in tackling this issue.

"While our reported retail theft numbers are not high, we take all reports of shoplifting very seriously. In addition to the financial implications, such crimes also have an emotional impact on staff.

“We would urge anyone who is a victim of such crime to report at the earliest opportunity."

Another man in his 40s has also been arrested this week for shoplifting offences and has been released on bail.
