With just three months to go until Microsoft ends support for Windows 10, Wiltshire-based IT specialists Black Nova Designs are urging businesses and individuals to take proactive steps now—before security vulnerabilities and hardware limitations leave them exposed.
From October 2025, Microsoft will stop issuing updates, security patches, and technical support for the widely used operating system, affecting millions of users across the UK.
“Lots of people still don’t realise that Windows 10 is reaching its end-of-life,” said Kyle Holmes, Managing Director of Black Nova Designs. “After October, using it becomes a real risk. No patches, no fixes, and no security support from Microsoft. For many businesses, that’s like leaving the door wide open to cybercriminals.”
Founded in 2015 by Kyle and his wife Danielle Holmes, Black Nova Designs has issued a practical checklist to help businesses stay secure, compliant, and competitive during the transition. The team supports more than 1,000 clients nationwide and is known for their personal, plain-English approach to tech support.
Six IT Essentials Before October
-
Upgrade your system
Windows 10 support ends in October. Devices manufactured before 2018 may not support Windows 11, so businesses should check compatibility or prepare to replace older machines before demand spikes. -
Protect your data
Ensure you have reliable data backups and a business-grade antivirus solution. “We offer monthly packages covering all of this from as little as £60+VAT,” Kyle said. “It’s a small cost for serious peace of mind.” -
Strengthen your passwords
“Weak passwords are still a massive vulnerability,” Danielle said. The solution? Use a password manager like LastPass to generate and store strong, unique logins. -
Use the correct Microsoft licence
Businesses using personal Microsoft licenses could face non-compliance penalties. “Some fines can run into six figures,” Danielle warned. “We’ll help you check and correct this.” -
Know who owns your domain
Domain names power your business email and website. “Always ensure it’s registered in your name,” Kyle advised. “We always do this for clients, but not every agency does.” -
Get Cyber Essentials certified
This government-backed certification shows your business follows cybersecurity best practices, boosting trust and helping you win contracts.
“Good IT isn’t just about the latest gadgets—it’s about protecting what matters,” Kyle added. “And that starts with being informed.”
