Wiltshire Council is appealing for information after a large quantity of asbestos and other waste was dumped near Monument Hill, between Etchilhampton and Stert, close to Devizes.
The fly-tipping is believed to have taken place overnight on Monday, 19th January, and was discovered by a member of the public the following day.
Council officers investigated the site and confirmed the presence of hazardous asbestos waste, along with a hi-fi system and panes of glass.
Wiltshire Council said the waste will need to be removed safely at significant cost and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made strictly in confidence, and if information leads to a conviction or fixed penalty notice, the witness will be eligible for a high street shopping voucher worth up to £200.
Cllr Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “If you know anyone who has had asbestos removed from their property recently, or you witnessed any suspicious behaviour at this bridleway near Monument Hill, please get in touch and help us catch these environmental criminals.
“Someone must recognise this waste, particularly as it includes a hi-fi system and other items.
“It’s disgusting that dangerous waste has been dumped in a Wiltshire beauty spot, and we are determined to take legal action against whoever is responsible.”
The fly-tip was found on bridleway ETCH7, near Monument Hill.
Anyone with information, or who wishes to report fly-tipping, can do so via My Wilts or by calling 0300 456 0100.
