Households across the UK are being urged to check whether their integrated heat-pump tumble dryer is part of an urgent safety repair programme, after a serious fire risk was identified in several models manufactured by Haier.

Affected appliances were sold under a range of well-known brands, including Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Haier, Hoover, Lamona, Iberna and Montpellier. Owners are advised to check their model and serial numbers online as soon as possible to see if their machine is included in the recall.

Those with affected dryers must stop using them immediately. If the plug is accessible, the appliance should be switched off and unplugged. The risk stems from a potential internal short circuit that can occur during normal use, causing the tumble dryer to ignite.

Haier launched a corrective action programme earlier this year covering around 103,000 appliances. However, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) instructed the company to halt its initial repair work after concerns were raised that the first modification was still unsafe.

Following an updated and approved modification, Haier has now resumed the programme and is contacting consumers again. The manufacturer has been prioritising second repairs for machines that received the original modification but still posed a risk. Repairs are now being arranged for the remaining 85,000 affected machines that have not yet been made safe.

The OPSS says it is continuing to monitor progress through regular reporting from Haier.

Residents are urged to check whether their tumble dryer is affected and contact the manufacturer immediately if it is listed.

Check if your tumble dryer is affected and contact the manufacturer if it is.
