Rescue centres are warning of a winter crisis as record numbers of abandoned cats and dogs arrive with complex behavioural issues.
Bath Cats and Dogs Home reports that more than 70% of the dogs and half of the cats in its care now need specialist behavioural support to overcome fear, anxiety and under-socialisation. The charity rehabilitates over 700 animals every year, but says frightened and poorly socialised pets are placing unprecedented pressure on its team.
“Too many rescue animals are struggling with stress and anxiety,” said Nicola Charman, Training and Behaviour Manager. “They can’t tell us their history, so our team uses all its expertise to rebuild their confidence. We’re here to pick up the pieces, but we need help to continue our work.”
Chief Executive Rachel Jones said the trend is worsening: “This year we’ve seen more cats and dogs arrive with complex behavioural challenges that require longer rehabilitation. Without proper socialisation as puppies or kittens, many become overwhelmed by unfamiliar people, places, sights and sounds. Your support will help them heal and prepare for their forever homes.”
To meet growing demand, the charity is appealing for donations through The Big Give Christmas Challenge, running 2–9 December. Contributions made via the campaign page (https://shorturl.at/XEarZ) will be doubled, providing vital funds for behavioural training, veterinary treatment and day-to-day care.
Among the recent success stories is Nana, an abandoned French Bulldog discovered trembling beneath a car earlier this year. Too scared to walk or eat when she arrived, she was gradually coaxed back to confidence by the behaviour team. She is now playful, affectionate and ready for adoption.
Bath Cats and Dogs Home must raise several million pounds annually to continue its work. The charity says donations made during The Big Give Christmas Challenge could make the difference for animals like Nana, helping them recover from trauma and find loving new homes.
