As more families face unexpected care decisions for ageing loved ones, Kingston House, Calne’s top-ranked not-for-profit care home, has launched a new campaign to help residents of Wiltshire make informed choices—before a crisis hits.

The Get Care Wise campaign encourages local families to start conversations about care early, offering free resources, practical guidance, and a simple decision-making tool to prepare for what can often be a difficult and emotional journey.

According to Kingston House, 1 in 4 adults only explore care options when they’re already in a crisis. This could be due to a sudden change in health or a gradual increase in needs that go unnoticed—until it’s too much for family members to manage alone.

“We believe the best care decisions are made in calm moments, not during emergencies,” said a spokesperson from Kingston House. “That’s why we’re encouraging families to take that first step now—when there’s still time to plan with peace of mind.”

At the centre of the campaign is the CARE checklist, a clear and approachable guide that helps families:

  • Clarify terms – Understand care jargon before it becomes overwhelming.

  • Agree when and how to act – Set shared expectations with loved ones in advance.

  • Research your options – Compare home care, residential, nursing, and dementia support.

  • Evaluate regularly – Monitor changes to avoid being caught off guard.

A free downloadable guide is also available, offering practical tips and accessible advice for families beginning to explore care needs.

Kingston House, rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), is committed to supporting both residents and their families throughout every step of the care process. Known for its compassionate approach and community focus, it continues to set the standard for thoughtful, person-centred care in Calne and the wider area.

“It’s not just about providing excellent care—it’s about helping families feel confident in their choices, whatever stage they’re at.”
