Residents planning health and fitness resolutions this New Year are being encouraged not to overlook their brain health, as local charity ReMind UK launches a new Brain Health Clinic.

The not-for-profit service, available from early January, is designed to help people aged 45 to 80 understand, protect and optimise their brain health from midlife onwards. The clinic offers a personalised “brain health MOT” and action plan aimed at improving brain function and supporting long-term cognitive wellbeing.

Each appointment lasts more than an hour and is led by a specialist memory physician alongside psychologists. Patients complete a pre-appointment questionnaire and undergo neuropsychological testing to assess cognition and mood, followed by a consultation to identify individual risk factors. They then receive a tailored Brain Health Prescription with practical lifestyle recommendations, with a summary shared with their GP to support ongoing care.

The launch follows growing evidence that dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing. The 2024 Lancet Commission report on dementia prevention, intervention and care identified 14 modifiable risk factors across a person’s lifetime which, if addressed, could prevent or delay nearly half of dementia cases worldwide.

Dr Lorraine Courcier, specialist memory physician at ReMind UK, said: “People often believe memory problems are something to focus on later in life, but the science is clear - brain health is shaped across decades. Our clinic empowers people to understand their personal risk early and take meaningful action through small, manageable lifestyle changes.”

Debbie Kendall, 62, from Bath, attended a pilot Brain Health Clinic and described it as “a valuable opportunity for a thorough brain health MOT”.

“They helped me find lots of small ways to become healthier without taking drastic steps or radically changing my routine,” she said. “It definitely kickstarted a more positive attitude towards prioritising my health.”

Melissa Hillier, chief executive of ReMind UK, said the clinic aims to help people feel informed and in control of their future health. “Small changes today can make a profound difference tomorrow,” she said.

To mark the launch, ReMind UK is offering £50 off appointments booked in January or February 2026.
