This Saturday, September 13th, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust will host visitors at Pewsham Locks, a former busy section of the waterway near Chippenham, as part of England's largest festival of history and culture, Heritage Open Days.
The event, taking place from 10am to 3pm, will offer guided tours of the restoration projects and wildlife habitats, as well as walks along over a mile of towpath and canal towards Lacock. A pop-up café will provide refreshments, including tea, coffee, and home-made cakes.
Visitors can expect to see the new bridge being built across the locks, the nearly completed carpenters workshop, and the dry dock, which features over 200 slate roof tiles sponsored by supporters from around the world. Each tile bears a personal message, making it a unique and special feature of the restoration project.
The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust aims to restore the waterway from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting several local towns.
Pre-booking is not required, but visitors are advised to arrive on foot via a short walk from the edge of Pewsham, as there is no on-site parking. For directions and further information, visit https://wbct.org.uk/mcc-events/ or email
Don't miss this opportunity to see the progress and variety of work underway on this ambitious restoration project. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 13th, and join the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust for a great day out!
