Bowood House & Gardens is set to honour the life and literary legacy of Jane Austen with a series of special events this summer and autumn, marking 250 years since the beloved author’s birth.

The celebrations reflect a little-known historical connection between Austen and the Bowood Estate. In 1806, the 2nd Marquess of Lansdowne—whose descendants still own and manage the estate—was Austen’s landlord while she lived in Southampton, just before she moved to Chawton and began writing her most famous works.

Visitors to Bowood can enjoy an interactive Jane Austen Trail through the historic house from Friday 12th to Sunday 21st September, offering a glimpse into Regency life and Austen’s world. Children are also encouraged to join in with a family-friendly version of the trail, complete with hidden objects and fun questions.

On Saturday 2nd August, the estate will host a magical open-air theatre production of Emma, one of Austen’s most cherished novels. The play, performed by touring company This is My Theatre, brings Austen’s wit and romance to life in the open air. Tickets start at £16.50, and early booking is advised.

Fans of classic elegance can also enjoy a Jane Austen-themed Afternoon Tea in the Kerry Suite at Bowood Hotel on Sunday 21st September, complete with live harp music to transport guests into Austen’s world. Afternoon tea is priced at £46.00 per adult and £23.00 per child, and prebooking is essential.

In addition to these events, Bowood’s Curator Dr Lizzie Rogers will present two talks on Jane Austen and the Georgian era on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September. A specialist in women’s history and historic homes, Dr Rogers promises an engaging and insightful look at the time period that shaped Austen’s writing.

Dr Rogers said: “As an author, Jane Austen continues to capture our imagination with her witty, clever, and romantic novels in which strong female characters shine. It is a pleasure to be able to celebrate her life and achievements for her 250th birthday by exploring the fascinating, fraught, and changing world she lived in through all these special events at Bowood Estate."

As part of the festivities, guests arriving in full Regency costume between Monday 15th and Sunday 21st September will receive half-price admission to Bowood House & Gardens.
