Young people from low-income families across Wiltshire and Swindon can now apply for financial support to help them access higher education, thanks to a long-running bursary programme.

Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation has opened applications for its University Bursary Programme, which offers eligible students under the age of 25 up to £1,900 per academic year. The funding is designed to bridge the gap between student loans and what families can afford, helping students focus on their studies rather than financial pressures.

Now in its 17th year, the programme has supported hundreds of students across the region. In 2025 alone, 79 students received bursaries totalling £400,000, with many reporting reduced stress and an improved ability to concentrate on their education.

The need for support remains high. National surveys show that average student rent now stands at £563 per month, and around a third of students have considered dropping out due to accommodation costs. Maintenance loans also often fall short of covering living expenses by around £500 per month.

Bursaries can be used to cover essential living costs, travel, course-related expenses, and books or equipment. The programme is open to young people aged 17 to 24 who live in Wiltshire or Swindon and meet eligibility criteria, including those receiving two elements of Universal Credit or young people in the care of local councils.

Nicola Hillier, Grants Manager at Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation, said: "These bursaries provide essential financial support at a time when many young people are questioning whether higher education is affordable. By easing financial pressure, we can help students focus on their studies and pursue the courses they are passionate about."

She added: "We would encourage all eligible young people to apply. If you have any questions about the application process or your eligibility, our grants team is happy to offer guidance and support."

Applications for the University Bursary Programme close at 5pm on Friday 10 April.
