Paralympic sprinter Katrina Hart had pupils at St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School fired up to chase their dreams during a visit this term.
The Commonwealth Games gold medallist led a high-energy fitness circuit before sharing her remarkable personal journey at a special assembly. Encouraged by her PE teacher, Katrina specialised in athletics at just 13 and went on to compete in the T37 category due to cerebral palsy. She claimed her first major title at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and later secured Bronze at the 2012 London Paralympics.
Her visit, organised through Great Athletes – a social enterprise helping children become more active – left pupils energised and inspired by her passion and determination. As part of the event, the school held fundraising activities that generated more than £600, some of which will help purchase new sports equipment for pupils.
Louise Taverner, Head of School at St Edmund’s, said: “Katrina’s story showed our children that challenges don’t have to hold you back. She had them smiling, moving and believing in themselves. It was a wonderful reminder that passion and perseverance can take you further than you ever imagined.”
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added: “We want every child in our schools to recognise their unique gifts and to feel supported in developing them. Visits like this can light a spark, broadening horizons and giving children the confidence to dream bigger.”
