The Major Minors, a community children’s choir made up of pupils from local primary schools, have brought festive cheer to the Calne and Marlborough communities with two Christmas performances.

On Friday, 28th November, the choir took to the stage at the Marlborough Christmas Switch-On, joining thousands of spectators who gathered to see the town’s festive lights illuminated by the Mayor.

Performing on the steps of Marlborough Town Hall, under spotlights and fully mic’d up, was a first-time experience for many of the young singers. Taking to the stage just moments after the lights were switched on, the Major Minors delivered a joyful and confident performance that families described as “magical” and “unforgettable”.

On Monday 1st December, the choir performed again, this time to a packed audience in Southwell Hall at St Margaret’s Prep, where they presented their own Christmas Concert. Families, supporters and staff enjoyed a warm and uplifting programme of traditional and modern Christmas songs, creating a celebration full of festive spirit.

Mrs Bethan Dudley Fryar, Director of Performing Arts, said the concert was a highlight of the season. “There is something magical about these young voices celebrating the joy of Christmas,” she said. “Their enthusiasm is infectious and they are a delight to work with. We are incredibly proud of the Major Minors - not only for their singing but for their friendships, sense of fun and love of performance.”

The Major Minors Children’s Choir is open to boys and girls in Years 3 to 6 from primary schools in and around Calne. A joint initiative between St Mary’s Calne and St Margaret’s Prep, the choir rehearses every Monday during term time and prepares for a public performance each term. As it has grown, the group has taken part in a variety of community events, including the Calne Music and Arts Festival, continuing to spread joy through song.
