Fynamore Primary School in Calne is set to take part in a major Wiltshire Council trial aimed at creating safer, cleaner routes for children travelling to and from school.
The new School Streets initiative temporarily restricts motor vehicle access near school entrances during drop-off and pick-up times, helping to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and make the school run safer for families.
Wiltshire Council will be holding a public consultation from Monday 3rd November until Sunday 15th December, inviting residents to share their views before the trial begins - with it expected to start after the Easter holidays in 2026.
Fynamore is one of six primary schools chosen for the year-long pilot, alongside schools in Warminster, Chippenham, Melksham and Staverton. Each school requested to take part, and council officers have been working closely with staff and parents to ensure the plans suit the unique road layout around each site.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “School Streets are about putting children’s safety first. We hope this trial will not only make it safer for children and their carers to get to and from school, but also help improve air quality and make it easier for pupils to walk or cycle.”
Residents and emergency services in affected roads will receive exemptions to drive through the restricted area, and other exemptions - such as for Blue Badge holders or school buses - will be considered where necessary.
Research from other areas of the UK has shown that School Streets schemes help pupils feel safer and lead to reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions near school gates.
Fynamore Primary School will now be preparing for the trial alongside the local community. Details on how to take part in the consultation will be shared later this month.
