A Calne-based alternative provision setting that supports children with special educational needs and disabilities has been nominated for a Small Business Award.
Blue Sky Learning, based on Porte Marsh Road, was founded by teacher Kirsty Burridge, who spent more than 20 years in mainstream education before deciding to create a service tailored to children at risk of falling through the gaps.
Initially run from her home for three years, the service quickly grew, leading to a move to larger premises in Calne in 2022. Blue Sky Learning now supports children aged 5–13 with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), Autism, ADHD and other additional needs.
The provision offers bespoke programmes designed to meet each child’s individual needs and aligns with Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) goals. Its approach combines therapeutic and practical activities such as Forest School, Thrive sessions, creative play, and wellbeing support to build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.
Blue Sky Learning also offers LEGO® Therapy, a structured play-based intervention designed to support children who need extra help with communication, social skills, or confidence. By working together on builds, children learn to take turns, share ideas, and problem-solve in a fun and engaging way. The approach is particularly beneficial for autistic children and those with social needs, helping to strengthen teamwork, boost language skills, and build lasting confidence.
Speaking about the award nomination, Kirsty said: “We are delighted to be recognised for the work we do. Our aim is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive. It’s about creating a space where their needs are understood and celebrated.”
Alongside the nomination, Blue Sky Learning is expanding its reach after securing a new tender to support children in Swindon Borough, with new premises opening soon. Its outreach team is also offering Forest School and LEGO® Therapy programmes in schools and homes, and the service supports local children in their work experience.
Blue Sky Learning hopes the award nomination will shine a light on the importance of inclusive education and the role of community-led initiatives in supporting families.
