When the Revd Caspar Bush became vicar of St Mary’s Church in Calne nearly two years ago, he brought with him a vision to encourage young people to engage with church life through music.

Rather than introducing guitars and drums, he hopes to inspire a new generation with the church’s long tradition of organ-led singing.

“Different sorts of churches offer all sorts of musical styles,” he said. “There are some great churches nearby where the music is led with guitars and a drum kit. But at St Mary’s we have traditional organ-led singing, and we believe many young people might actually be drawn to the idea of being part of something that has been happening here for centuries.”

That vision is now taking shape with the launch of a new youth choir, Young Voices, led by St Mary’s newly appointed Director of Music, Jemima Palfreyman. The choir is open to anyone in Year 5 and above, with no experience required, and rehearsals will take place every Friday in term time at 5.15pm. Participation is free of charge.

“This new youth choir is all about learning to sing, making friends, having fun and contributing to worship together in music,” Jemima explained. “You don’t need any previous experience of singing. Whilst we welcome and encourage an interest in the Christian faith, we are open to all. Many of our performances will take place as part of Christian worship, so choir members will also play a valuable role in church life.”

The launch event will be held on Friday 12th September at 5.15pm in St Mary’s Church. Parents are welcome to stay for tea and watch a sample choir practice, with robes to try on afterwards and refreshments provided.
