A Calne woman who was arrested for drink-driving thanks to a quick-thinking shop worker appeared in court this week.

Michelle Wright, 55, visited the Spar shop in James Avenue, Calne to purchase alcohol just before 9am on the 25th May this year. A member of staff at Spar noticed she was evidently already highly intoxicated and when she was seen to be driving away from the shop, the employee contacted the police.

Police located Wright parked up outside her home in Westerham Walk, officers said the bonnet was still warm. She provided a positive breath test and was arrested. A further test was taken at the custody suite which gave a reading of 109 micrograms - the legal limit being 35 micrograms.

Wright appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (19/10) where the court heard she suffers from 'mental and physical difficulties' and was 'devastated to find herself in court'. She has since undertaken treatment to deal with her alcohol problem.  She was fined £200 plus court costs and banned from driving for 28 months.
