Calne Men’s Shed welcomed the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Martin Nye, and his wife, Deputy Lieutenant, Victoria Nye, yesterday for a tour of the group’s workshop on Anchor Road - and an opportunity to learn more about the projects, camaraderie and community support that have made the Shed one of the town’s most valued organisations.
The couple spent time chatting with members, hearing how the Shed provides a friendly, creative space for adults of all ages - including those adjusting to retirement, living alone or looking for a supportive social circle. They were shown examples of the handmade items produced in the workshop, many of which are sold locally to help fund the group’s running costs.

Throughout the visit, the kettle was kept busy and members shared stories over tea and cake, giving the High Sheriff a real sense of the warmth and welcome the Shed is known for.
Afterwards, he wrote to the group saying he and Victoria had found the visit “interesting and inspiring”, adding: “My thanks to you and your colleagues for making us feel so welcome - and of course for all the really important work you do for the community.”

The visit was also welcomed by Calne’s Deputy Mayor, Tim Havenith, who said: “The Calne Men's Shed is an invaluable asset to our community. The High Sheriff's visit highlights the vital role they play in tackling social isolation and promoting mental well-being among their members in Calne. It’s more than a place to work on projects - it’s a supportive space where friendships are forged and skills are shared. As the Calne Town Council representative, I wholeheartedly support their mission and look forward to the continued positive impact they have on both their members and the wider town.”

Calne Men’s Shed - which, despite its name, welcomes women as well as men - has steadily grown since relocating to its current home next to Calne Recreation Ground. As well as offering practical sessions and social support, members undertake projects that benefit the wider community, from rebuilding book-swap libraries to crafting benches and planters seen around the town.
The Shed is also working to secure its long-term future and improve facilities at its Anchor Road base. Members have been fundraising to support essential upgrades to the building, including plans for a wheelchair accessible toilet to ensure the space remains inclusive for everyone who uses it.

Chair and trustees say interest in the group continues to grow, with new members regularly joining and a steady stream of visitors popping in to see what the Shed is all about.
Calne Men’s Shed is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm for anyone who would like to drop by, meet the members and see the workshop in action.
