In a unanimous decision on 9th December, 2024, the Town Council has agreed to support a rise in the precept received from Wiltshire Council Tax for their new budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.

As part of the new budget, the Town Council plans to enhance services and facilities in Calne, promising a host of exciting community events and improvements.

Notable initiatives include the launch of a Food Festival scheduled for August 2025 and commemorative events for the VE Day anniversary in May 2025.

Additionally, the budget allocates funds for a new kitchen at the Beversbrook Sports and Community Facility, aimed at making the venue more appealing for parties and events. A significant focus has also been placed on youth engagement, with funding directed towards establishing a new youth facility at the Recreation Ground.

Other key budget components include ongoing maintenance and a replacement fund for the all-weather pitch at Beversbrook, as well as preparations for the devolution of play parks and allotments from Wiltshire Council, which will bring additional land and services under local management.

The current band D charge is £226.35 per year. This works out at £4.35 per week.
The new band D charge will be £260.19 per year. This works out at £5 per week which is an increase of 65p per week on the current year.

Town Mayor Cllr Jon Fisher voiced strong support for the budget, emphasising the essential services provided by the Town Council, including parks, sports pitches, allotments, and community support through grants and a hardship fund. "In six of the last ten years, we have made no increase to the precept," said Fisher. "However, if we don’t invest now, our services will fall behind, and our buildings and facilities will cost more in the long run."

Chair of the Finance Working Group, Cllr Robert Bolton-Merrick, remarked that the budget reflects the diligent efforts of both Councillors and staff in addressing the town’s needs over the upcoming year. He noted that the proposed increase is modest compared to the rising cost of living, particularly during a time when the Town Council is expanding its services.

With the budget now approved, residents of Calne can look forward to a thriving community with enhanced facilities and a vibrant array of events in the coming year.
