THERE are collection points in all Calne supermarkets for donations to the foodbank, but you may have noticed that the collection point in the new Asda Express store in London Road, is collecting for the Devizes Foodbank.

The reason for this, is that Asda’s store donations are collected by The Trusell Trust, who then distribute the food to local foodbanks registered with them.

Calne Foodbank is an independent charity who are registered, and work with, the FareShare network so aren't registered with The Trussell Trust. Consequently, all donations collected at the Asda store go to the nearest Trussell Trust foodbank which is in Devizes.

Asda has said that the collection bin is to be trialled for three months under the Devizes banner and if not deemed worthwhile at the end of this period, it will be removed.

With no collection bins for the Calne Foodbank currently on the south side of town, organisers have written to Asda asking that if donations for the Devizes foodbank are not forthcoming, customers should be given the opportunity to donate to the Calne one.

A spokesperson for Calne Foodbank told us: "Obviously, we are disappointed that Asda only provide collection bins for Trussell Trust food banks, however, we are hoping that an exception can be made in this circumstance. Equally, we are not looking to take donations from Devizes food bank, who are doing their best to support their community.

"If people wish to support Calne Foodbank they should not place donations in the Asda collection bin."
