St. Mary's Church, a Grade 1 listed building and a cornerstone of the Calne community for over 850 years, has announced "Project 2026," a comprehensive renovation plan estimated to cost £650,000.
The project aims to modernise the church's facilities to better serve the needs of the community while preserving its historical significance.
Recognising that St. Mary's holds different meanings for different people, from a place of faith to a hub for community events and a repository of local heritage, the Church Council is committed to adapting the building for the 21st century.
Key improvements include the removal of the Victorian pews at the back of the church -(as you enter the side door to the right) to create a more flexible space for larger services and events, with stackable chairs replacing the fixed seating. The font will also be relocated to a more prominent position without hindering activities.
Beyond the physical renovations, some of the other proposals include:
- Keeping the church unlocked, aiming to keep St. Mary's open to the public every day, starting in time for the summer holidays of 2025. Community Engagement:
- Applying for a Heritage Lottery grant to fund a Community Engagement Officer who will encourage people of all ages to visit and learn about the church's rich history.
- Sustainable Energy: Installing solar panels and batteries on the South Chapel roof following its repair, as part of a commitment to environmental sustainability.
While the Church of England authorities are supportive of the plans, significant funding is required. The church is actively seeking grant opportunities, but they are also appealing to the generosity of local individuals and organisations to help realise the project.
A spokesperson for Project 2026 said: "We are working hard to identify sources of grant funding, and are confident this will cover some of the cost. However, we know that a large amount will need to come through the generosity of local individuals and organisations,"
With that in mind the church is seeking assistance in various forms. Do you have skills you can offer to help this project? Do you run a local business or organisation ? Maybe you could consider making Project 2026 your charity for the year. Could you organise a fundraising event?
A launch event will be taking place at St Mary's Church on Saturday 28th June at 3pm where you can find out want the plans involve, give your opinions and find out how you can help.
