PROPERTY constructors, CG Fry & Son will be holding a public consultation tomorrow ahead of submitting an outline planning application to build 180 new homes and a medical centre on land in Calne.
The 16.23 hectare site is located at Wenhill and would include vehicular access from Silver Street.
The application for the new development includes up to 180 new homes, a serviced site for a medical centre, public open space, green and blue infrastructure (a network of natural and designed features that combine green spaces with water bodies), new cycle and pedestrian links.
A petition against the development has been started by resident, Deidre Airey, who lives near to Wenhill Lane. She said: "The traditional habitat that nature has claimed in this area is now at risk and as a community, we must raise our voices."
"This area, unspoilt as of yet, serves as a fundamental pathway for wildlife accessing the river and surrounding areas. The inevitable noise and pollution that comes with such vast construction projects would be detrimental to local wildlife, which is already suffering the consequences of ongoing urban sprawl" Deidre explained.
And the effects on wildlife aren't her only concern. "Equally pressing is the issue of traffic and air pollution. Silver Street, alongside the entire town centre, already navigates its way through strenuous traffic during peak hours. Our community, our roads, and our air quality are at risk of being compromised by the inevitable influx of additional vehicles.
"This proposed construction project will drastically alter the town’s character, changing not just our beloved town but also our treasured countryside. The views of the local people must be considered before the green light is given to such a massive development."
Deirdre isn't alone in her opposition to the plans. When CG Fry & Sons delivered letters inviting those living near the proposed development to the consultation, many took to social media to express their reservations.
Jake Ridgeley said: "Silver Street in Calne is heavily congested, particularly during rush hour and throughout much of the day. Given the town’s broader road infrastructure challenges, how do you plan to manage the additional traffic flow onto Silver Street, a route that is already under significant strain?"
Calne Town Councillor Robert Merrick noted: "No point in objecting. The new government planning means we will get them anyway. Its best to meet with the developer and encourage them to build in keeping and to make sure the medical centre can be opened and staffed with doctors and medical teams"
The consultation will take place tomorrow, 5th March in the Town Hall from 2.30pm to 7pm.
