Police are warning Calne residents this afternoon after reports that so-called “Nottingham Knockers” are currently operating in the Cherhill and Studley areas.
Calne Police say they’ve received several calls within the past hour about people going door-to-door selling household items and claiming to be part of a probation or rehabilitation scheme. Officers have confirmed this is not true - the probation service does not run such programmes.
The sellers often carry large bags of cleaning products or small household goods and may show fake work permits or ID cards to appear legitimate. Police warn that while some people buy items to get rid of them, these visits can also be used to gather information about homes and residents for potential future crimes.
There have been cases of elderly residents handing over large sums of money as they can be quite aggressive.
The price for whatever has been purchased usually comes to a note – usually £10. The householder disappears to get the money– and this is when the scam begins, according to the police. When the note is handed over, the lad examines the condition and how long it took the person to get it. If it is crumpled, they accept it and move on. If it is crisp flat and new – they are much more interested and may engage the person in more conversation, to obtain details about them.
The addresses of elderly or vulnerable people are all noted and the information and addresses are then sold on to criminal gangs.
PCSO Mark Cook said: “Please be vigilant and never feel pressured into buying anything on your doorstep. If you feel threatened or intimidated, contact police immediately. If cold callers don’t get any sales in your area, they’re less likely to return.”
Residents are advised to keep doors locked, avoid opening the door to strangers, and remind elderly or vulnerable neighbours not to buy or sell on the doorstep.
If you see these callers or feel unsafe, call Wiltshire Police on 101 — or 999 in an emergency.
