A planning application has been submitted to Wiltshire Council to demolish the former Co-Op building in Mill Street, Calne, to make way for a new care home.
Cedar Care Homes, a family-run business with 18 sites across the UK, purchased the site in September 2024.
The company plans to build a 60-70 bedded dementia nursing home, subject to planning approval, which could create an estimated 80 jobs for local residents.
The proposed care home would provide general nursing care, dementia nursing care and complex dementia care.
The application states that the demolition of the former Co-Op building is necessary due to its derelict state and demolition will prevent further issues with anti-social behaviour following contact from the Calne Neighbourhood Police Team. The vacant site has been broken into more than once with damage caused.
Cedar Care Homes Operations Manager, Arjun Desai, previously stated that the company hopes to start construction on the new care home soon, pending planning approval.
Cedar Care Homes has a reputation for building high-quality care homes, with their newest developments, Dearbourne Manor and Arbour Walk in Bristol, winning awards for their design.
