THERE have been a few social media posts recently from residents in Calne who have been enthralled to spot an otter in the River Marden.

However, with the sightings has come a degree of worry from some, that they may be targeted by those less pleased to see them.

The otter is a highly protected species and it is an offence to disturb an otter or any area where they might be.
Although those of us with fish ponds in their garden may not feel warmly towards them, as an apex predator - to an otter an unprotected fish pond is their version of McDonald's - but for the most part, they hunt for fish and crustaceans in our brooks and rivers.

The Friends of Marden Valley are running a project to observe, record and report sightings of our native European Otter population.

Jeremy Percy, managing the project told us:  "These are wonderful creatures and a vital piece of the ecological jigsaw that makes up our rivers. We have been putting out infrared tracking cameras at night in an effort to more clearly understand the range and numbers of this species and in recent weeks there have been a number of sightings along the Marden river during the day, even in the middle of town, as a new brood of young otters leave the nests and travel further afield.

"It would be really helpful for anyone sighting an otter to let us know where, when and any other comments, including photos if possible. "
