A new Ninja Warrior-themed play area has opened earlier than expected at Calne Recreation Ground, with children and young people already enjoying the new facilities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this morning, 23rd January, attended by Town Mayor Cllr Ian Thorn, town councillors, grounds staff and contractors.

The free outdoor space has been designed to encourage active and energetic play, featuring obstacle-course-inspired equipment including climbing frames, balance beams, stepping posts, traverse walls and timed challenge routes.

The play area has been laid out in separate zones to provide different levels of challenge for various age groups, while also incorporating accessible features such as level access routes, clear sightlines and seating for parents and carers.

Rob Mercer, Amenities, Conservation and Sustainability Manager at Calne Town Council, said the project was shaped by local input.

“This project has been shaped by community feedback and delivered to a high standard,” he said. “We are pleased to see the play area completed and ready to be enjoyed by children and young people in Calne.”

The equipment was supplied by Proludic Ltd, which described the site as the largest free public ACTI’Ninja course in the UK.

A spokesperson for the company said the design brings together “competition, variety and fun”, with a wide range of obstacles suitable for different ability levels, including a large central tower forming the focal point of the course.

Installation was carried out by Calne-based contractor S J Aplin Playgrounds Ltd, with materials chosen to withstand year-round use.

The project forms part of Calne Town Council’s wider efforts to improve public spaces and promote healthy, active lifestyles within the town.

An official opening event is planned for Easter Sunday.
