The annual Mayor Making ceremony took place last night at Calne Town Hall, as the mayoral year came to an end for Jon Fisher.
Cllr Ian Thorn was proposed as the new Calne Town Mayor by Cllr Tim Havenith, and seconded by Cllr Sam Pearce-Kearney .
Ultimately, Cllr Thorn secured the position. He told us: "I’m delighted and proud to have been elected town mayor for Calne.
"I want to spend the year supporting our wonderful groups and organisations and do everything I can to help revitalise our town centre and campaign for a new medical centre."
Outgoing Mayor Fisher said: "Calne is the best town in Wiltshire. It is made so by the people who make this community what it is - people who are generous and resilient. Calne's strength lies in the volunteers, the neighbours, the organisers, and the quiet champions who show up, time and time again, for each other.
"From our incredible town events to supporting each other through moments of hardship, this town stands together. That is Calne’s greatest asset. As Town Mayor I’ve been privileged to be right at the heart of this for the last 12 months and it has truly been an honour.
"This year, I stepped away from the tradition of Town Mayor’s joining the county circuit attending each other’s events, to focus the role on Calne, our needs and our future. That choice led to real results: £60,000 secured to revitalise Phelps Parade, exciting plans for a mobile bandstand, and stronger ties with Wiltshire Council’s Economic Development team as we begin to reimagine our town centre.
"As I hand over the chain, I am aware it is only the start. I feel real pride in what we've begun and have faith that our new Town Mayor will keep building a brighter Calne. I wish Ian, and the new Deputy Mayor my very best wishes for the year ahead."
The new Mayor, Ian Thorn, then left the room to be dressed in his Mayoral robes, when he returned, he proposed Cllr Tim Havenith as Deputy Mayor, this was seconded by Cllr Robert MacNaughton.
Tim said: "I feel honoured to be the Deputy mayor of Calne.
"Many thanks to all that have supported me on this journey."
New to the council following the May elections - Cllr Orrey Pike was also proposed as Calne Town Deputy Mayor by fellow Conservative Bobby Seymour and seconded by Reform UK Cllr Mike Sankey.
Following the Mayor Making ceremony there was a reception buffet which was attended by Wiltshire Police's Chief Constable Catherine Roper and six visitors from Caln Township, USA who presented the Town Council with a drawing.
