Calne Town Council has submitted a planning application to Wiltshire Council for a brand-new, inclusive destination play area - designed to captivate children of all ages and abilities.
The ambitious plans aim to transform the existing play area into a vibrant, accessible space featuring a contemporary Acti’Ninja-themed junior zone and a jungle-themed toddler area. The scheme emphasises inclusivity, accessibility, and gender neutrality, and is designed to promote physical, social, and cognitive development in a safe and stimulating environment.
Key features include:
-
A 7-metre-high ninja-style multi-play structure for adventurous juniors
-
A sensory-rich toddler area with jungle-themed equipment
-
All-weather surfacing, sensory planting, and new seating for supervision and relaxation
-
A new perimeter footpath and pedestrian entrance from The Glebe to enhance access from the north of the site
The new design not only increases the play value of the park but also aims to draw more families into Calne’s town centre—supporting the local economy and helping establish the Recreation Ground as a vibrant hub for the community.
If approved, work is expected to begin in October/November 2025, with an official opening in early 2026.
Local residents are invited to support the application and review the plans either: in person at Bank House, The Strand (Monday–Friday, 9:30am–4:00pm) or online via Wiltshire Council's Planning Portal Search PL/2025/05206.
There will also be a chance to view and discuss the proposals at the Planning, Licensing and Highways Consultative Committee at Calne Town Hall on Wednesday, 16th July 2025.
Plans will be on display from 6:00pm, with the meeting beginning at 6:30pm.
The Recreation Ground continues to evolve as a community destination. Alongside the new play area:
-
The tennis courts are receiving a surface upgrade and a new online booking system via the LTA Clubspark platform (work begins 14 July, lasting five weeks).
-
Park Yoga sessions are being held every Sunday at 9:30am until 14 September—no booking needed, just bring a mat or towel.
-
The Junior Park Run for children aged 4–14 continues weekly, offering a free, fun 2K run every Sunday at 9:00am.
