Calne’s past is being brought to life in two new heritage publications, launched this autumn by Deputy Town Mayor Tim Havenith.

Calne Curiosities is the latest title to be released, following the second edition of Calne Place Names earlier this year. Both books combine careful historical research with an engaging storytelling style, aiming to make local history accessible and enjoyable for all.

Available from 1st October, the books can be purchased online via Amazon or directly from the Calne Heritage Centre. Profits from sales at the Heritage Centre will go towards supporting its work preserving and sharing the town’s history.

“These books are a celebration of Calne’s character,” said Cllr Havenith. “From railway remnants to street name origins, they invite readers to rediscover the familiar with fresh eyes.”

Calne Curiosities takes readers on a journey through some of the town’s lesser-known stories, from the dramatic escape of Violet Charlesworth to the windswept mystery of Morgan’s Hill. Designed so entries can be read in any order, the book offers a mix of history, legend and local lore.

Meanwhile, the updated Calne Place Names builds on its original research, providing greater detail about the history and meaning behind the town’s streets and neighbourhoods.

Together, the publications aim to encourage people to explore Calne’s heritage, spark conversation and pride in the community, and ensure its stories are preserved for future generations.

Further details are available at the Calne Heritage Centre or by searching for the titles on Amazon.
