The UK is bracing itself for a potential heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar to record-breaking levels.

Temperatures will rise throughout the week, reaching around 27°C on Wednesday and 28°C in Calne on Thursday.

By Saturday, many locations are expected to exceed heatwave values, with temperatures potentially surpassing 30°C in some parts of the UK.

A heatwave is declared when a location records at least three consecutive days with temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave threshold. For most of the north and west, this threshold is 25°C, while for Greater London and the Home Counties, it's 28°C.

According to the Met Office, it's likely that heatwave thresholds will be met in some places by the beginning of the weekend, particularly in London, the east of England, the Midlands, and parts of east Wales.

The heatwave is expected to last until early next week, when high pressure moves away from the UK, causing temperatures to fall. However, there's uncertainty around the peak temperatures and how quickly they'll drop.

Temperatures might peak in the low 30s this weekend before easing early next week. Some forecast models even suggest temperatures could reach the mid-30s Celsius by Monday, which would be a record high for June in the UK.

The current record for June is 35.6°C, set in 1976.
